Solution

Each Part: 2 Marks

(a) Hydrogen can be obtained by treating hydrochloric acid with metals like Na, Zn, Fe, etc. Metallic chlorides are obtained as a by-product, for example,
2Na+2HClΔ2NaCl+H2Zn+2HClΔZnCl2+H2Fe+2HClΔFeCl2+H2

(b) When concentrated HCl is heated with oxidising agents like manganese dioxide (MnO2), lead peroxide (PbO2), red lead (Pb3O4) etc, it is oxidised to water and chlorine, for example,
MnO2+4HClΔMnCl2+2H2O+Cl2PbO2+4HClΔPbCl2+2H2O+Cl2Pb3O4+8HClΔ3PbCl2+4H2O+Cl2
