The significance of the molecular formula of a compound includes the following:

  • The molecular formula represents the name of the elements present in it.
  • The molecular formula gives the no. of atoms of each element present in one molecule of the substance.
  • The molecular formula represents a definite mass of the substance (i.e. the mass of the substance in grams).
  • The molecular formulas are very important in finding information about chemical compounds.

Example: Salt (NaCl), (1 sodium atom and 1 chlorine atom), ethanol (C2H5OH) molecule of ethanol contains two Carbon, 6 Hydrogen, and 1 Oxygen atom, a molecule of ammonia (NH3) contains 1 atom of nitrogen and 3 atoms of hydrogen ), etc.
