A virus similar to human immunodeficiency virus or HIV has been known to exist amongst the apes and this is known as the simian immunodeficiency virus or SIV. It is likely that this virus somehow gained entry into humans, probably when they ate chimpanzees and mutated to become HIV which causes AIDS in humans. These two viruses, HIV and SIV are similar and hence, SIV can infect humans also.
