Question

The average molar mass of a mixture of O2 and SO2 having these gases in the ratio of 2:1 by moles is

  1. 42.67

Open in App
Solution

The correct option is A 42.67
Since the ratio is 2:1 by moles then,
Let’s consider O2 = 2/3 mol, and SO2 = 1/3 mol

Now,
Mavg = (M1n1+M2n2)/n1+n2 where M1 and M2 are molar masses of O2 (32 g/mol) and SO2 (64 g/mol) respectively

whereas n1 and n2 are the moles of O2 and SO2 respectively

Mavg = (32 x 2/3 + 64 x 1/3) / 1
= 128/3
= 42.67 g
