Question

The density of water at 4 degree celcius is 1.0 ?10^3 kg m^-3. Thevolume occupiedby one molecule of water is approximately (a)3.0 ?10^-23ml (b)6.0?10^-22ml (c)3.0?10^-21ml (d)9.0?10^-23ml

Solution

Dear Student,
density of water = 1000 kg-m-3 = 1 g-ml-1
mass of 6.023 * 1023 molecules of water is 18 grams.
mass of 1 water molecule = 1 * 18/6.023 * 1023 = 2.988 * 10-23 grams.
As, density = mass/volume
So, volume = mass /density
volume = 2.988 * 10-23/1 ml
Therefore volume of 1 water molecule is 2.988 * 10-23 ml.

Regards.
