The last part of the small intestine is called the ileum. The ileum has an inner lining of glands called the intestinal glands which are responsible for producing intestinal juice. This intestinal juice contains enzymes like erepsin, maltase, sucrase, and lactase. Erepsin breaks down peptides to produce amino acid. Maltase is responsible for breaking down maltose to produce glucose. Sucrase breaks down sucrose to produce glucose and fructose. Lactose is broken down by lactase to give glucose and galactose.
Lipase is present in the pancreatic juice and converts emulsified fats into fatty acids and glycerol.
