Solution

Law of conservation of momentum

Law of conservation of momentum states that for two or more bodies in an isolated system acting upon each other, their total momentum remains constant unless an external force is applied.

In case of a non-isolated system,

  1. If an external force acts, the final momentum will be affected by it, it may increase or decrease.
  2. Therefore, it will not be the same as initial momentum.
  3. Momentum is not conserved.

Therefore, the system must be isolated for the law of conservation of momentum to hold.
