Question

The molecular weight of O2 and SO2 are 32 and 64 respectively. If one litre of O2 at 15 and 759mm pressure contains N molecules, the number of molecules in two litre of SO2 under the same conditions of temperature
(1) N/2 (2) N (3) 2N (4) 4N

Solution

The correct is option is 3
PV=nRT

or ,PRT=nv

since P, R and T is the same for both the gases, we can write

(nv)O2=(nvSO2)
or, n021=nS022
or no2=nso22 or nso2=2no2

for O2

Numberofmoles=no.ofmoles6.23×1023=N6.023×1023
Therefore,

Number of moles of So2=2N6.23×1023
Now, no of molecules for So2
noofmolecules=noofmoles×6.23×1023
$ number of molecules=\frac{2N}{6.023\times 10^23}\times 6.023\times
10^23$
NoofmoleculesofSo2=2N
