Question

The structure of a water molecule is shown in figure(9-E1).Find the distance of the centre of mass of the molecule from the centre of the oxygen atom.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1, Given data and figure

Mass of the oxygen molecule, m1=16 kg

x1=y1=0

Mass of the hydrogen atom, m2=1 kg

Step 2, Finding the distance

Now we can write

x2=0.96×1010 sin 52 m

y2=0.96×1010 cos 52

We know

sin520=0.788

cos520=0.615

Now we can write

m2=1 kg,x3=0.96×1010 sin 52 m

y3=0.96×1010 cos 52

For finding the center of mass we can write

xcm=m1x1+m2x2+m3x3m1+m2+m3

=16×0+1×(0.96×1010 sin 52)

+1×0.96×1010sin 521+1+16=0

ycm=m1y1+m2y2+m3y3m1+m2+m3

=16×0+2×0.96×1010 cos 521+1+16

=2×0.96+1010cos 5218

=6.4×1012 m
