Solution

The correct option is C

8 steps

During the substitution reaction of propane with chlorine, the chlorine atoms replace one hydrogen in each step. This continues till all hydrogen atoms are replaced by chlorine atoms and octa chloropropane is formed. Following reactions take place during the substitution reaction of propane with chlorine to form Octachloropropane:

(i) C3H8(g)+Cl2(g)C3H7Cl(g)+HCl(g)

(ii) C3H7Cl(g)+Cl2(g)C3H6Cl2(g)+HCl(g)

(iii) C3H6Cl2(g)+Cl2(g)C3H5Cl3(g)+HCl(g)

(iv) C3H5Cl3+Cl2(g)C3H4Cl4(g)+HCl(g)

(v) C3H4Cl4(g)+Cl2(g)C3H3Cl5(g)+HCl(g)

(vi) C3H3Cl5(g)+Cl2(g)C3H2Cl6(g)+HCl(g)

(vii) C3H2Cl6(g)+Cl2(g)C3HCl7(g)+HCl(g)

(viii) C3HCl7(g)+Cl2(g)C3Cl8(g)+HCl(g)

Therefore, the substitution reaction of propane with chlorine to form Octachloropropane will occur in 8 steps.
