Question

The sum of the magnitudes of two forces acting at a point is 18N and the magnitude of their resultant is 12N . If the resultant makes an angle of 90o with the force of smaller magnitude, what are the magnitudes of the two forces?

Solution

It is a right angled triangle with larger magnitude force forming hypotenuse as the resultant makes an angle of90

Hence B2=R2+A2

R2=B2A2

A+B=18

On substituting the value

B=18A

On substituting the value of B in equation above and solving we get

A=5andB=13
