The test that identifies the presence of proteins by detecting peptide bonds in the given substance is called Biuret test. The Cu2+ ions in the Biuret reagent forms a complex with the nitrogen molecules present in the peptides, forming a violet coloured complex, thereby indicating the presence of proteins.
Whereas the test used in forensic science for fingerprint analysis is a very highly sensitive test for protein, called the Ninhydrin test. Here the test detects the free -NH2 groups in the peptide backbone or in lysine residues of the proteins.
