Question

Three elements 'X', 'Y' , 'Z' having atomic number 11, 7 , 6 respectively react with oxygen to form their iroxides .

Arrange these oxides in increasing order of their basic nature.

Solution

1. Atomic number 11 is sodium and forms Na2O
2. Atomic number 6 is carbon and forms CO2
3. Atomic number 7 is nitrogen and forms NO2

Metal oxides are basic in nature since they react with dilute acids to form water and salt. Metal oxides dissolve in water to form metal hydroxides (alkaline in nature). Non-metal oxides are acidic in nature.

The tendency to lose electrons decreases as a period progresses, and hence the metallic character decreases. Since non-metal oxides are acidic. As a result, the basic character decreases from left to right over time. As a result, as a period progresses from left to right, the basic nature of oxides decreases, and the acidic nature of oxides increases.

so the order of basicity is X > Z > Y.
