Question

What do you understand by stoichiometric coefficients in a chemical equation?

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Stoichiometry:-

  1. Stoichiometry deals with calculations of masses and sometimes also volumes of the reactants and products involved in a chemical reaction.
  2. We can also say that it is nothing but basically the relationship between the amounts of reactants and the products in a chemical reaction

Part 2:- Stoichiometry coefficients:-

  1. The number before the formula units or molecules used to balance the equations is called the stoichiometry coefficient.
  2. These show the number of moles/molecules of that particular substance.
  3. Calculations based on chemical equations are called stoichiometry calculations.

Therefore, in order to balance the equation the number before the formula units is called the stoichiometry coefficient in a chemical equation.
