What does gram negative bacteria mean?

Depending on the retention of the Gram stain, bacteria are classified into two types

  1. Gram-negative Bacteria
  2. Gram-positive Bacteria

Gram-negative bacteria:

  1. Gram-negative bacteria contain very thin single-layered peptidoglycan with periplasmic space.
  2. It contains high lipid and lipoprotein content due to the outer membrane.
  3. These are more resistant to antibiotics.
  4. Upon gram staining, they do not retain crystal violet.
  5. Examples of gram-negative bacteria-Enterobacter species, Salmonella species, etc.
