What does oxidase mean?

Oxidase:

1. Oxidase is an enzyme that catalyzes reactions involving dioxygen (O₂) as an electron acceptor.
2. In reactions involving hydrogen atom donation, oxygen is reduced to water (H₂O) or hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂).
3. Some oxidation reactions that involve monoamine oxidase or xanthine oxidase do not involve free molecular oxygen.
4. Oxidase is a subclass of oxidoreductase.
5. Example: cytochrome c oxidase that enables the body to use oxygen for the final components of its energy production and electron transport chain.
