Question

What happens when an acid reacts with a metal oxide? Explain with the help of an example. Write a balanced equation for the reaction involved.

Solution

An acid reacts with a metal oxide to produce salt and water. The equation can be written as:
Metal oxide + Acid → Salt + Water

For example, copper(II) oxide (CuO) is a metal oxide. Dilute hydrochloric (HCl) acid reacts with copper (II) oxide to form copper (II) chloride (CuCl2,a salt) and water (H2O). The balanced equation of this chemical reaction is:

CuO(s)+2HCl(aq) CuCl2(s)+H2O(l)
