Question

What is a double decomposition reaction? Give an example each for neutralization and precipitation reactions.

Open in App
Solution

Double decomposition reaction: It is the type of reaction in which the two reactants exchange their ions and result in the production of two new products.

Example: HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)

HCl is hydrochloric acid.

NaOH is a sodium hydroxide base.

NaCl is sodium chloride.

H2O is water.

Neutralization reaction: It is the type of reaction in which an acid and a base react to form salt and water.

These are types of double displacement reactions.

Example : H2SO4(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) Na2SO4 (aq) +2H2O

H2SO4 is a sulphuric acid.

NaOH is a sodium hydroxide base.

Na2SO4 is a sodium sulfate salt.

H2O is water.

Precipitation reaction: It is the type of reaction in which insoluble salt is formed because of the reaction between two reactants.

These are also types of double displacement reactions.

Example: Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2NaI(aq)PbI2(s)+2NaNO3 (aq)

Pb(NO3)2 is a lead nitrate solution.

NaI is sodium iodide solution.

PbI2 is a lead iodide obtained in form of a precipitate.

NaNO3 is a sodium nitrate solution.
