Question

What are mitosis and cell division?

Open in App
Solution

Mitosis:

  1. Mitosis is a process that occurs in all cells in the body except reproductive cells.
  2. The number of chromosomes in the daughter cells remains the same (i.e., diploid 2n); hence it is called equational division.
  3. If a diploid cell divide by mitosis, the products are diploid.
  4. Mitosis results in the formation of two daughter cells.
  5. Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase are the four stages of mitosis.

Cell division:

  1. In all living creatures, cell division is a critical process.
  2. A parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells in the process of cell division.
  3. DNA replication and cell expansion occur simultaneously during cell division.
  4. There are two types of cell division mitosis and meiosis.
