Solution

Pulse polio program

Pulse Polio Programme is an initiative to abolish poliomyelitis from India since 1995 by the Government of India. All children below the age of five are immunised orally. In this programme, 2 doses are given 2 to 4 weeks apart.

OPV

OPV (oral polio vaccine) is an attenuated vaccine. It is produced by weakening the strains of the pathogens. They produce an immune response but cannot cause the actual disease.

Eradication

The polio virus spreads through the faeco-oral route and through house flies that breed due to unsanitary conditions. Certain areas in India are yet to eradicate polio as the sanitary conditons are poor. Besides, awareness is a problem in extremely backward areas. Although the WHO has declared India to be polio free in 2014, still some random cases have been reported.
