Thomson and Rutherford's models of atoms were the earliest models to explain the structure of an atom. After the discovery of the electron by J.J. Thomson, he proposed a model to explain the structure of the atom. Later, Rutherford discovered the nucleus and introduced a new model using both electron and nucleus. The main difference between the Thomson and Rutherford model of an atom is that the Thomson model of an atom does not contain any details about the nucleus whereas the Rutherford model of atom explains the nucleus of an atom.
