Superintendent of Police (S.P.)

  • Officers of Indian Police Service (IPS) and State Police Service can get the post of Superintendent of Police.
  • In a non-metropolitan district, the Superintendent of Police is the head of the district.
  • In various headquarters, the third head is the Superintendent of Police.
  • In smaller districts, the Superintendent of police is the head of the police force.
  • The Superintendent of Police is the head of a large rural or urban area within a district, in case the district has a Senior Superintendent as the head of the Police force.

Sub-Inspector (S.I.)

  • In the police hierarchy, the designation of Inspector is ranked above Sub-Inspector, and Assistant Sub-Inspector is ranked below the post of Sub-Inspector.
  • As per Indian police rules, among the police officers who can file a charge-sheet in the courts, the Sub-Inspector (S.I.) is the lowest ranked Police officer in the hierarchy who has the powers to do it.
  • Officers below the Sub-Inspector can investigate on behalf of the Sub-Inspector but cannot file a charge sheet in the courts.
  • A Police Sub-Inspector is usually the first investigator officer and he will usually have some police personnels under his command.
  • Under various law enforcement agencies in India, there are Sub-Inspectors, who do not have investigative powers. These Sub-Inspectors belong to specialised units such as Armed Battalions, State Armed Reserve Police, Central Armed Police Force.
  • National level examination is conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC), to recruit eligible candidates for the post of Sub-Inspector in various Central Armed Police Forces such as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP).

Assistant Sub-Inspector (A.S.I)

  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (A.S.I) is below the post of Sub-Inspector (S.I.).
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (A.S.I) is above the post of constable in the police force.
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (A.S.I) cannot file charge-sheet in courts.
  • In police stations, A.S.I is in charge of training centres and armouries.
  • A.S.I is a non-gazetted police officer.

Deputy Superintendent of Police

  • Deputy superintendents are now state police officers who are promoted from inspector or they are direct entrants at that rank.
  • A DSP is most commonly known as a sub divisional police officer (SDPO) who is in charge of a subdivision in the state of West Bengal.

Deputy Commissioner (D.C.)

  • Indian Administrative Service (I.A.S) officers are appointed as Deputy Commissioners. I.A.S officers are selected through a rigorous selection process conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • Deputy Commissioner (D.C.) has the power to collect land revenue.
  • Deputy Commissioner (D.C.) is responsible for implementation of government schemes in the district.
  • D.C is responsible for the overall law and order.
  • D.C. makes sure that government land is not encroached in the district.
