What is the function of cryolite in the extraction of aluminium other than as a solvent of bauxite?

Hall- Heroults Process is a process of Electrolytic reduction of Alumina for the extraction of aluminium metal from its oxide.

Function of cryolite in the extraction of aluminium:

• In this process, the melting point of Alumina is $2000℃$and Alumina is a bad conductor of electricity.
• Cryolite reduces the melting point to around $900-950℃$
• Cryolite also makes molten Alumina a good conductor of electricity.
• This makes it easier for electrolysis process.

Cryolite helps in lowering the melting point and making Alumina a good conductor of electricity.
