Question

What is the greenhouse effect? How does the greenhouse effect cause global warming?

Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Explain what the greenhouse effect is.
  • Mention the greenhouse gases that cause the greenhouse effect.
  • Explain how excessive greenhouse effect causes global warming.
Solution:
  • Greenhouse effect is a phenomenon in which the heat from the sun is trapped within the earth's atmosphere, which heats up the planet
  • Our environment consists of various types of gases such as carbon dioxide, methane nitrous oxide, water vapour, etc. These gases mainly cause the greenhouse effect.
  • Various reactors and engines in the industries, the motorised vehicles on roads, and various appliances at home work on energy sources derived from fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, and natural gas).
  • As these fossil fuels are burned, various greenhouse gases generate in the atmosphere, which warm the environment through the greenhouse effect.
  • But when these fossil fuels are burned in excess, the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere increases drastically, which in turn leads to excessive heating of the earth's environment. This excessive heating of the earth's environment due to an increased greenhouse effect is called global warming.
