Question

When sodium sulphate solution is added to barium chloride, a white precipitate is formed. Write the chemical name of precipitate obtained and type of chemical reaction involved in this process.

Solution

Double displacement reactions generally take place in aqueous solutions in which the ions precipitate and there is an exchange of ions. On mixing a solution of barium chloride with sodium sulphate, a white precipitate of barium sulphate is immediately formed. These reactions are ionic in nature.

When sodium sulphate solution is added to barium chloride, a white precipitate is formed and this white precipitate is known as barium sulfate which settles down in form of insoluble precipitate.

Reaction involved =

Na2SO4+BaCl22NaCl+BaSO4

(sodiumsulfate)(bariumchloride)(sodiumchloride)(bariumsulfate)
