• Carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas are produced when steam is passed over red hot carbon.
• Carbon monoxide with Hydrogen is called water gas or syngas.
• The temperature is maintained at $1200°\mathrm{C}$
• The chemical reaction is as follows:

• In this step, the excess amount of steam is given to water gas at $450°\mathrm{C}$temperature.
• This produces Carbon monoxide and Hydrogen gas.
