Photorespiration is a biochemical process in plants in which oxygen inhibits the Calvin cycle, the carbon fixation portion of photosynthesis. It results in the light-dependent uptake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide and is associated with the synthesis and metabolism of a small molecule called glycolate.
