Open in App
Solution

Definition:

  1. A goitre is a bump on the front of the neck occurring due to the enlargement of the thyroid gland.
  2. When you swallow, the lump will slide up and down.
  3. The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland located right in front of the windpipe in the neck (trachea).

Causes:

  1. Goitre is a condition caused by a lack of iodine in the diet.
  2. Salts are the source of iodine for our body.
  3. Because hilly locations like the Himalayas are so distant from the sea, the iodine concentration of the hill soil is very low.
  4. As a result, food grown in such soil becomes lacking in iodine.
