Why is lightning a candle an exothermic reaction?

Open in App
Solution

Exothermic reaction:

  1. A process in which energy is emitted in the form of light or heat is known as an exothermic reaction.
  2. As a result, rather than absorbing energy from the surroundings as in an endothermic reaction, energy is transferred into the surroundings in an exothermic reaction.

Lightning candle:

  1. Because it involves a combustion event, lighting a candle is an exothermic reaction.
  2. When combustion occurs, energy is produced in the form of heat, and smoke is produced as a byproduct.

Hence, lightning on a candle is an exothermic reaction.
