Why plants cannot use atmospheric nitrogen?

Nitrogen:

1. Nitrogen is present in the free gaseous state in the atmosphere.
2. Plants cannot absorb $N_2$directly.
3. But they can absorb nitrogen in form of nitrites and nitrates present in the soil.
4. Atmospheric nitrogen is converted into usable forms by microbes present in the soil.
