Ans: While India gained Independence from British rule on 15 August 1947, the process of making the Indian Constitution started much before that.
In 1946, the Constituent Assembly was formed. The Constitutional Assembly was given the task to prepare the Constitution. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first president of India, was elected president of the constituent Assembly.
It started the process of Constitution-making by forming some committees. One such important committee was the Drafting Committee. It was a seven-member committee formed on 29 August 1947 headed by Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who gave the Constitution its final shape.
The committee Studied and borrowed principles of various constitutions of the country. It took 2 years 11 months and 18 days to complete the Indian Constitution. On 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly passed the Constitution and enforced it on 26 January 1950.
