Question

Write the balanced chemical equation when Hydrochloric acid reacts with Zinc Oxide?

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Reacting to the given molecules:

  • The chemical formula of hydrochloric acid is HCl. It reacts with Zinc Oxide (ZnO) to form Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2) and water (H2O)
  • The unbalanced chemical equation can be written as ZnO(s)+HCl(l)ā†’ZnCl2ā€‹(s)+H2O(l)

Step2: Balancing the chemical equation

  • The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.
  • On the reactant side: 1 Zinc atom from ZnO, 1 Oxygen atom from ZnO 1 Hydrogen atom from HCl and 1 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Zinc atom from ZnCl2, 2 Cl atoms from ZnCl2, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O and 1 Oxygen atom from H2O.

Step3: Balancing the reactant molecules by multiplying 2 by HCl

  • The chemical reaction is as follows: ZnO(s)+HCl(l)ā†’ZnCl2(s)ā€‹+H2O(l)
  • Zincoxide+HydrochloricAcidā†’ZincChloride+Water
  • After multiplication, we have an equal number of molecules on both sides of the reaction. equation is ZnO(s)+2HCl(l)ā†’ZnCl2(s)+H2O(l)

Step4: Balanced chemical equation is as follows:

  • The chemical reaction is as follows: ZnO(s)+2HCl(l)ā†’ZnCl2(s)+H2O(l)
  • On the reactant side: 1 Zinc atom from ZnO, 2 Hydrogen atoms from HCl and 2 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Zinc atom from ZnCl2, 2 Chlorine atoms from ZnCl2 and 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O and 1 Oxygen atom from H2O

Hence, the equation is balanced.
