BSEB: Bihar School Examination Board

BSEB or the Bihar School Examination Board is the main education board in the state of Bihar. The Bihar board is responsible for conducting the Class 10 (Matric) and Class 12 (Inter) exams every year within the state for all the schools affiliated to BSEB.

Latest Notification: This year, the Class 10 Bihar Exams 2021 have been cancelled. In the meantime, a large section of Class 12 students have taken to Twitter demanding for the cancellation of board exams, in view of the rising cases of Covid-19. Amidst this second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, students are demanding that their Class 12 exams should be marked either on the basis of online exams or internal assessment like in the case of Class 10 students. However, till now the exams have only been postponed like with every other state board, and it is expected to be reviewed post a discussion between the authorities on 1 June 2021, depending on the situation then.

BSEB Overview

The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) is an autonomous body under the state education department of Bihar. It is a statutory body under section 3 of Bihar School Examination Act – 1952 and functions under the Bihar Government. The main function of Bihar education board is to conduct the Matric exams (i.e. Class 10 exams) and Intermediate exams (i.e. Class 12 exams) every year for all the affiliated schools.

Apart from conducting class 10 and 12 exams, BSEB also has various other roles. It was set up with the aim to improve the quality of education in the state. Some main functions that the Bihar board oversees are;

  • Conducting Matric and Inter exams
  • Conducting other departmental exams like Diploma in Physical Education, TET, etc.
  • Prescribing various courses of study, syllabus, and books
  • Carrying out duties, which are stated in the Bihar School Examination Act

Bihar School Examination Board Matric Exams

The BSEB Class 10 exams i.e. Matric exams are conducted by the BSEB every year in the month of February (tentatively) every year. This year the results were out on 26 May 2020. Almost 16 to 17 lakh students, take the exam every year and the pass percentage has seen a rise in recent years. The Bihar board also conducts the supplementary exams for the students who fail to clear the Class 10 exams.

Bihar Board Intermediate Exams

The Bihar board also conducts the BSEB Class 12 exam i.e. Inter exams for the affiliated schools, across the state. The Class 12 exams are generally conducted in the month of February and the results are declared in March. This year Class 12 results were announced on 24 March 2020. Just like the Class 10 supplementary exams, the BSEB also conducts the Class 12 supplementary exams, for all the three streams which include science, arts, and commerce.

Bihar School Examination Board Syllabus

The BSEB syllabus for all the classes is prescribed by the State Government of Bihar. The subjects in Class 10 include Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Maths, Social Science (History, Political Science, Geography, Economics), and English. After Class 10, students get options to choose either the Science stream, Commerce stream, or Arts stream. The syllabus of all the subjects are streams are decided by the board and the Government.

BSEB Exam Pattern

For both the Matric and Inter exams, the pattern is decided by the Bihar School Examination Board. In the exams, each paper will have 50% objective type questions which consist of 1 mark each. The students are also provided with OMR sheets for the 1 mark MCQs. The papers will also consist of descriptive type questions. Apart from that, there are subjects which have the provision of practicals, which hold the weighatge of 30 practicals + 70 written. Bihar Board Exam Dates

Bihar board exam or Bihar board pariksha for Classes 10 and 12 is generally conducted in the month of February, across various test centres in the state. All the students from the affiliated schools take up the Matric and Inter exams, every year to continue with their higher education. Bihar State Board Exam Online Results

After the commencement of Matric and Intermediate exams, BSEB declares the results on their official portal. The results for Classes 10 and 12 are generally declared by June and the notification for supplementary exams are out thereafter. The supplementary exams are conducted every year for the students who fail to clear the board exams.

What is the Passing Marks of Bihar Board Matric Exam?

Bihar board students have to get a score of at least 30 marks out of 100 in each subject. Overall, the students should score an aggregate of 150 marks. They should pass in all subjects except English and optional subjects if they are to be declared as passed. Bihar Board started the BSEB application process for the Class 12 compartment and special examinations from April 5, 2019. Candidates, who wish to apply can do so through the official website. This year, the exams were conducted in April. In order to appear in Bihar Board Compartmental Exam 2020, students will have to fill in the online exam form and pay the requisite fee of Rs 70 via online mode.
