Preparation of Lyophilic Sol - Gum

In this article, we have discussed step-by-step procedure to perform an experiment which will help you understand how to prepare a colloidal solution of gum. Read the article carefully to understand the aim, procedure and the apparatus required to perform the experiment. Conduct the practical and try to match the result with this.

Aim:

Preparation of lyophilic sol of gum.

Theory:

Gum has the ability to form sol when water is used as a dispersion medium. This formation can be accelerated with the help of heat. To prepare sol the mixture of water and gum is heated to about 100° C.

Materials required:

  1. Tripod stand
  2. Funnel
  3. Beaker of about 50 to 250 mL
  4. Wire gauze
  5. Distilled water
  6. Pestle and mortar
  7. Glass rod
  8. Filter paper
  9. Burner
  10. 500 mg gum

Procedure:

  1. Take a mortar and add 500 mg of gum to it.
  2. Pour a few drops of distilled water and pestle the gum into a fine paste.
  3. Transfer the smooth paste to a 50 ml beaker.
  4. Take a 250 mL beaker and pour 100 mL of distilled water and heat the water till it starts boiling.
  5. Slowly pour the gum paste into the boiling water and with the help of a glass rod keep stirring it constantly.
  6. Once you have finished transferring the paste allow it to boil for 10 minutes.
  7. Wait till the mixture cools down.
  8. With the help of a filter paper and a funnel filter out the contents.
  9. Label the filtrate as gum sol.

Precautions to be taken during the experiment:

  • The apparatus required for the experiment should be washed with distilled water.
  • Use of distilled water to prepare gum sol.
  • Make sure to convert gum into a fine paste before adding it to the beaker containing boiling water.
  • Constantly stir the mixture while preparing gum sol.

Viva Voce:

1. What is gum mixed with?

Ans: Distilled water.

2. The gum and distilled water mixture are heated to what temperature?

Ans: 100° C.

3. How much amount of distilled water is taken to prepare 500 mg of gum sol?

Ans: 100 mL

4. Pour the gum paste into cold distilled water before boiling. True or false?

Ans: False.

5. Constant stirring is not required while adding the gum paste. True or false?

Ans: False.
