Answer: This scheme aims at providing scholarships to talented students.
Q2: How old is this scheme?
Answer: This scheme was started in the year 1963 by NCERT.
Q3: How long does it take for the successful candidates to receive the scholarships?
Answer: The awardees studying in Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce, Languages, Vocational Studies and Fine Arts are eligible to receive a scholarship up to PhD level, whereas the awardees studying professional courses in medicines, engineering, technology, management and law are eligible to receive the scholarship up to second-degree level.

Answer: The two-tier examination process helps in identifying talented students.
Q5: What is the two-tier examination scheme?
Answer: This is a scheme in which the examination is conducted in 2 stages.
Q6: Who conducts the first level examination?
Answer: NTSE Stage I is conducted by the states and union territories. The purpose of the first level examination is to screen the candidates for the second level examination conducted by NCERT.
Q7: Who conducts the second level examination?
Answer: National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) conducts the second stage of the examination.

Answer: The NTSE can be taken by students currently in Class X.

Answer: No
Q11: How many scholarships are awarded every year?
Answer: Every year 1000 scholarships are available.

Answer: Yes, there are reservations for SC and ST candidates.
Q13: Does the scheme have the provision of reservation for physically challenged students?
Answer: Yes, there is a provision of 3% reservation for physically challenged students.
Q14: Are there any eligibility conditions for appearing in the screening examination like qualifying percentage of marks in the previous year annual examination etc?
Answer: Eligibility criteria for stage 1 varies for different states. The State/ UT may impose any eligibility condition for appearing in Stage I examination.
Q15: When will the notification be given?
Answer: For Stage I examination advertisement is released in the month of July – August.
Q16: Where can I get the application for Stage I?
Answer: You should contact the Liaison Officer of the State/UT. Address of Liaison Officers is mentioned on the NCERT website.
Q17: Do all the states/ UTs conduct Stage I examination every year?
Answer: Yes, each state/UT conducts its own stage I examination.
Q18: When is the Stage I examination held?
Answer: The Stage I examination is conducted on the second Sunday of January except for a few places like Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Meghalaya and Mizoram. In these places, it is conducted on the second Saturday of January
Q19: When to appear for Stage I NTSE 2022?
Answer: The examination is held in the month of January, for which the application form is given in the month of Oct-Nov (as per advertisement of each State/ UT).
Q20: Should we apply through school or directly?
Answer: The application form should be submitted after getting it duly signed by the Principal of the school before the due date.
Q21: If I have some queries regarding the Stage I examination whom should I contact?
Answer: Liaison Officer of the particular State/ UT.
Q22: Can the application form be sent directly to NCERT?
Answer: No, the application form should be submitted to the Liaison Officer.
Q23: What will be the medium of examination for Stage I?
Answer: The medium of the examination shall be as announced by the State/UT.
Q24: Is there any fee for appearing for Stage I examination?
Answer: Each State/ UT has its own rules with respect to charging of fee. It has to be checked in the advertisement.
Q25: Are the marks scored in Stage I examination added to the Stage II examination conducted by NCERT?
Answer: No
Q26: Is there any fee for appearing in the National Level Examination?
Answer: No fee is charged for NTSE Stage-II Examination.
Q27: I have cleared Stage I examination. Should I fill another form for Stage-II examination?
Answer: No, you need not fill another form for Stage-II examination.
Q28: Whom should I contact for Roll Number for the Stage II examination?
Answer: NCERT will send the Roll Number and venue details by speed post.
Q29: What is the syllabus for NTSE examination?
Answer: There is no prescribed syllabus. However, the standard of examination shall be conforming to the secondary level.
Q30: How many papers will be there in Stage II?
Answers: For Stage II NTSE there are three papers. Mental Ability Test (MAT) of 50 questions, Language of 50 questions and Scholastic Aptitude Test of 100 questions.
Q31: Is there negative marking?
Answer: Yes, there is negative marking. For each wrong attempt, â…“th marks will be deducted.
Q32: Language test is conducted in how many languages?
Answer: It is conducted in Hindi and English. Candidates must choose between these two languages.
Q33: Is there any interview in the examination schedule?
Answer: There is no interview.
Q34: How will I come to know about the results?
Answer: Results will be uploaded on the NCERT website. Only the selected candidate will receive the results from NCERT through speed post also.

Answer: No, there is no provision for rechecking or re-totalling.
