What is Meant by Vector Subtraction?

In mathematics, vector subtraction is the process of finding the difference between two vectors, which is the inverse process of the vector addition. The vector addition and subtraction can be performed in both the two-dimensional plane as well as in the three-dimensional plane. While subtracting two vectors, the process is similar to the addition of vectors, except the vector being subtracted is actually reversed in its direction. Consider two vectors, “a” and “b”. In vector addition, the procedure to be followed is “a+b”, whereas, in vector subtraction, the process should be “a + (-b)” which is equal to  “a-b”. In this case, the vector -b has the same length as the vector b, but it is in the reverse direction.

The vectors in the three-dimensional plane should be of the form:

Vector, A = ai+bj+ck

Note that, if the vector A is equal to the vector B, then the vector has zero magnitude and unspecified direction. This kind of vector is called the zero vector or null vectors.

Question:

Determine the vector subtraction for the two given vectors, such as vector u = 10i + 7j+3k and vector v = 5i+4j+2k

Solution:

Given that, vector u = 10i + 7j+3k

vector v = 5i+4j+2k

Now, we have to find u-v

Hence, Vector u – vector v = ( 10i + 7j+3k) –  (5i+4j+2k)

Now, subtract the vector

Vector u – Vector v =  10i + 7j+3k – 5i – 4j – 2k

Vector u – Vector v = 5i+3j+k

Therefore, the vector subtraction of two vectors, u-v = 5i+3j+k
