Tamil Nadu SSLC – Secondary School Leaving Certificate is a certification given to the students after their successful completion of a class 10 state board examination. Every year in the month of March – April, the Directorate of Government Examinations conduct SSLC Public Examination to judge the performance of students at the end of their schooling.

The Directorate of Government Examinations was formed in the year 1975 with the responsibility for conducting the Board examinations for the students of Class 10 and 12. In the year 2011, The Government of Tamil Nadu has established a new Board for School Examination in the name of State Board of School Examinations by merging the Board of Secondary Education and Board of Higher Secondary Examinations.
Every year around 9 to 10 lakh students appear for TN SSLC Public Examination. In the year 2018, about 10 lakh students appeared for the exam and the overall pass percentage was 94%.
Along with conducting exams the board also prescribes and develops 10th class books Tamil Nadu board for all classes. Samacheer Kalvi 10th books are followed by every school affiliated to Tamil Nadu Board.
Tamil Nadu SSLC (Class 10) Conduct of Examination:
The Directorate of Government Examinations conducts SSLC Public Examination thrice in an academic year.
- The Annual exam is conducted in the month of March/April.
- Instant Special Supplementary Examinations in the month of June/July.
- Supplementary Examinations in the month of September/October.
Scheme of Tamil Nadu SSLC (10th Standard) Examination:
The Directorate of Government Examination conducts SSLC Examination for the following subjects. The total duration of each examination will be for 2 ½ hours.

SSLC Minimum Passing Marks:
Candidates should score minimum 35 marks in each subject out of 100 marks. As the Science subject consists of both theory and practical examination, the pass marks, in theory, is 20 marks out of 75 and in practical 15 marks out of 25. Marks scored in the optional subject (part IV) will not be taken into consideration for the declaration of a pass result.

Eligibility Criteria for appearing to TN SSLC Examination
- Age Limit
As per the TN Board of education, the student appearing for TN SSLC or 10th samacheer kalvi board exam should have completed the age of 14 years on the first day of the month in which the examination is to be conducted. However, if the candidate has not completed 14 years then they need to submit the certificate from the head of the school along with the medical certificate signed by the registered Medical Practitioner testifying the Physical fitness of the student to attend the examination.
- Examination Fees:
According to the Department of Government Examinations, the examination fees are revised as follows:

The above-mentioned fees are exempted for the SC, SCA, SS, ST, MBC/DC, physically disabled candidates, for the students studying in Tamil Medium and other Government schools and also for those students whose parents annual income below Rs.2 lakhs.
- Procedure for applying for examination
The board of examinations has introduced the online system from March 2012 session for the purposes of online application registration for private candidates. The regular candidates can contact the school management for their application registration. All the students applying for the TN SSLC public exams should provide all the necessary information including the name, Date of Birth, language and subjects to appear, photo and contact details with the residential address.
