Trigonometric Function Formulas

You know that we have

  • Hypotenuse – the longest side
  • Base – third side
  • Perpendicular – the other side opp to the angle in a right triangle

Similarly, the six trigonometric functions are:

  • Sine
  • Cosine
  • Secant
  • Cosecant
  • Tangent
  • Cotangent

Now let’s study the basic trigonometry formulas.

The Trigonometric properties/Formulas are given below:

Property

Identity / Property

Mathematical value

Sin a

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{opposite}{hypotenuse}\end{array} \)

Cos a

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{adjacent}{hypotenuse}\end{array} \)

Tan a

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{opposite}{adjacent}\end{array} \)
\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{sina}{cos a }\end{array} \)

Sec a

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{hypotenuse}{adjacent}\end{array} \)
\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{1}{cosa}\end{array} \)

Cosec a

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{hypotenuse}{opposite}\end{array} \)
\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{1}{sina}\end{array} \)

Cot a

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{adjacent}{opposite}\end{array} \)
\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{cos a }{sin a } = \frac{1}{tan a}\end{array} \)
