The National Eligibility Test also known as UGC NET Exam, which is a qualifying examination for recruitment of university and college teachers, may not be conducted twice a year as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposed that the exam should be made an annual exercise. Traditionally the exam has been held twice every year, in the month of December and July for assistant professor recruitment and the grant of a junior research fellowship in colleges and universities.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken this step in an attempt to make the candidates more serious towards their preparation. They are planning to conduct the National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) only once a year from 2018. Also, the UGC (University Grants Commission) has ended the uncertainty over the exam (July edition) and they have decided that the Central Board of Secondary Education will continue to conduct the exam even as the board had expressed its inability earlier.
According to sources, CBSE has conveyed to the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry that is not in favor to conduct the examination twice every year. In case the HRD ministry accepts this, a single exam will be conducted from the year 2018. The Human Resource Development ministry is likely to look into this issue soon.
Sources also say that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposed the idea keeping in mind that only 17% of the registered applicants take the examination and only 4% of them clear it. It also says that conducting the exam once in a year will make aspirants serious about UGC NET exam.
While the HRD ministry had not issued any guidelines in this matter, the Central Board of Secondary Education has not issued any notification for the exam schedule in July, which is usually out by April.
